What Ancient Cultures Believed About Mirrors
Mirrors have long carried meanings beyond reflection, appearing in beliefs about souls, divination, protection and other worlds.

A mirror does something unusual: it presents a perfect visual double that seems to exist in another space. Long before modern optics explained reflection, that experience invited symbolic interpretations.
Mirrors became associated with souls, prophecy, protection and boundaries between worlds. Their reflective surfaces could be treated as tools, warnings or sacred objects.
The Double in the Glass
The mirror’s mystical reputation survived because reflection still feels intimate and strange. We recognize the image immediately, yet it is always reversed and unreachable.
That tension between familiarity and otherness is why mirrors remain one of folklore’s most durable symbols.
